2 Using X Windows

Window based displays like this one are becoming common on home computers, so you may have seen a similar system before. If you are used to MacOS or MS Windows, you already know some of the basics. The approach is similar in X Windows, but not as uniform.

A lot of the power in using X Windows comes from the underlying operating system, Unix, since it allows you to run several tasks at a time. It's a lot easier to keep track of several tasks if each one has its own window.
